St. Clair County Jail Roster

The jail roster of St. Clair County, Illinois, is a public resource that allows you to find out who is currently in custody at the county jail. StClairCourt.us helps locate publicly available information about current and recent inmates. Additionally, data can be obtained through the official website of the sheriff's corrections department, by phone, or in person at the jail. The roster allows citizens to check the detention status of a specific person, view charges, and booking dates. It is maintained by the Corrections Division of the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department, and records are updated hourly.

Find St. Clair Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created when a detained person is officially registered at the jail. This process includes photographing, fingerprinting, and recording personal information.

Each record contains the following information:

  • Unique booking number
  • Date and time of custody
  • Charges
  • Arresting agency (e.g., Belleville Police, State Patrol, or the Sheriff's Department itself)
  • Bail amount, if set

Current records are available through the Inmate Search page on the sheriff's website. If you need a record of a person who has already been released, the online roster may not contain this data — it only displays individuals in custody at the time of the search.

To obtain archived records, submit a request according to the Illinois Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). More information about citizens' rights to access public documents can be found on the Public Access Counselor page of the Illinois Attorney General. The request is sent directly to the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department.

Search the St. Clair Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The roster supports two main search methods.

Search by Last Name

Enter the last name in the appropriate field. If necessary, add the first name to narrow the results. A few tips:

  • Use the full legal name — abbreviations or nicknames usually do not work.
  • Check the spelling. One letter mistake can lead to empty results.
  • If the last name is common (e.g., Smith or Johnson), be sure to include the first name.

Search by Booking Number

The booking number is the most accurate way to find a specific record. It is assigned to each person during jail registration. If you received this number from a lawyer, relative, or court document, enter it in the appropriate search field.

If the Search Yields No Results

The absence of results does not necessarily mean that the person has not been detained. Possible reasons:

  1. The person has already been released — the roster only shows current inmates.
  2. Registration is not yet complete — there may be a delay between the actual arrest and the appearance of the record in the system.
  3. The name was entered incorrectly, or the person is registered under a different name variant.
  4. The person has been transferred to a state facility — in this case, use the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) inmate search.

In any of these cases, call the jail at (618) 456-7606 to clarify the person's status directly.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in St. Clair

According to the official website, the records in the St. Clair County jail roster are updated hourly. This means that the data is usually quite current, but not displayed in real-time.

Key limitations to be aware of:

  • Delay between arrest and appearance in the system. After arrest, the person must be transported to the jail, registered, photographed, and fingerprinted. This entire process can take from one to several hours.
  • Released individuals disappear from the roster. Once a person is released on bail, by court decision, or after serving their term, their record is removed from the online list. The roster is not an archive of all past bookings.
  • Technical delays. Sometimes data entry lags behind actual events due to staff workload or technical issues.

For checking a person's criminal history outside the current jail roster, additional resources are available. The Illinois State Police Offender Registry contains information about individuals convicted of sex crimes and those who have committed violence against minors. Court records for criminal and civil cases are available through the St. Clair County Circuit Clerk's office.

If you need information that cannot be found in the online roster, contact the sheriff's department with a FOIA request or visit the jail in person.
